How to Blur the Background of a Photo

Two ways to blur a photo background — full-image blur for aesthetics, or AI background separation for portraits.

Full blur vs subject-aware blur

For an aesthetic soft background behind text or graphics, blurring the whole image works well and is instant.

To keep a person sharp while blurring only behind them, first remove the background with the AI tool, then place the subject over a blurred copy.

Getting a natural depth-of-field look

A moderate blur (8-15px) mimics the shallow depth of field of a real camera lens better than an extreme blur.

Combine the Background Remover and Blur tools: blur a duplicate of the photo, then layer the cut-out subject back on top for a portrait-mode effect.
