Understanding what takes up file space

Image file size is determined by the number of pixels (resolution) and how much detail is stored per pixel (quality). A 6000×4000 photo intended for a 1200 px wide website is storing five times more pixels than necessary.

Start by checking whether the image is larger than it needs to be before applying compression.

Batch reducing multiple images

When you have many images to reduce — for a web gallery, a product catalog, or an image library — use batch compression to process all of them in one step with consistent settings.

Set a target quality and maximum dimension that works for the largest images, and apply the same settings to the whole batch for a uniform result.
